Alexander Lenard was born in Budapest. His father, a brilliant linguist, spoke a dozen languages. His mother was a painter. He was educated in Austria, studied medicine, and was awarded his doctor's degree at the University of Vienna. Between 1928 and 1938 he traveled widely across Europe, studying French, English and the Scandinavian languages.
